How It Works

Icon™ MaxG IPL utilizes optimized pulsed light technology which, unlike lasers, uses many wavelengths of light with special filters that deliver the best wavelengths to treat specific aesthetic conditions. As the handpiece glides over the area being treated, specialized pulses of light are delivered into your skin and target brown spots, sundamage and vessels without causing harm to the surrounding skin. Once these targets absorb the energy they are destroyed and will slowly disappear through your body’s natural healing process. You will see your brown spots turn darker in color and flake off over the next few weeks. You may also see an immediate improvement in your vessels with a continued clearance over the next few weeks.

Pre-Treatment

· Remove all make-up and lotions prior to the treatment.

· At least 2 weeks prior to your appointment, discontinue unprotected sun exposure, tanning beds, tanning creams, tretinoin or retinal on the areas receiving treatment.

Post-Treatment

Immediately after the treatment, it is common to feel a mild sunburn-like sensation around the treatment site, which typically lasts 2-24 hours. Redness and/or swelling may accompany this and usually resolves in 2-3 days.

· Avoid sun exposure on the treated area and use a sunscreen SPF 45 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

· The pigment may initially look raised/darker with a reddened perimeter. The pigment will gradually turn darker over the next few days and begin crusting and eventually flaking off of the skin from day 7-21.

· The vessels may undergo immediate graying or blanching, or they may exhibit a slight purple or red color change. The vessels will fully or partially fade in about 10-14 days.

How it works.

The Cynosure Icon MaxRs handpiece emits highly controlled laser energy into areas of unwanted hair.

The laser is then absorbed by the melanin (pigment that gives skin color) and causes an increase in temperature within the area. This in turn damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin known as hair follicles. Because the main function of the hair follicles is to produce hair, the laser-induced damage impairs this ability. As a result, future hair regrowth in the area is prevented. With additional treatments, more hair follicles are damaged and the results become more noticeable. Not all hairs are in the same stage of development and only those in the anagen phase (growth stage) are effectively damaged so most patients will require additional treatments to achieve smoother, radiant, and aesthetically pleasing skin.

Shave 24 hours prior to your laser appointment. This is an important step for any body part to ensure a safe and pain-free experience. It allows enough time for unwanted hair to not grow back before the appointment. Shaving well in advance also allows your skin to avoid experiencing any increased sensitivity from the razor such as razor bumps or razor burns.

The area being treated must be cleansed thoroughly on the day of your appointment, but refrain from using deodorant, makeup or any lotions on the areas being treated. This is to ensure the laser is being penetrated well into the skin without any barriers. If mistakenly used, make sure to inform your medical aesthetician so she can take the necessary steps to cleanse the area before beginning the treatment.

Stop threading, bleaching, plucking, waxing and threading for a minimum of 2-4 weeks prior to beginning any laser treatment. Keep in mind that laser works by targeting the root of the hair, therefore it’s vital to grow out the hair after plucking, threading or waxing and shave 24 hours before your laser appointment

There are certain medications that should be avoided before beginning laser hair removal treatments, especially those that cause sun sensitivity (photosensitivity). Many of these include certain acne medications. It is important and highly crucial to inform your medical aesthetician during the consultation process of any medication you are taking or have taken in the past to ensure safety of your skin. These tips will help your treatment go a lot smoother and to work better, and safer. Do not hesitate to ask questions when making your appointment. Avoid the sun and tanning in order to avoid skin discolouration and increased skin sensitivity post treatment. It is recommended to avoid prolonged, direct sun exposure, self-tanning lotions, as well as tanning beds minimum 2 weeks before any laser hair removal treatment. Sunscreen is highly recommended to use immediately after the treatment and continued use throughout the series of appointments.
